Our 30 Day LIVology Challenge is showing results for those who are wanting to lose weight but long-term it is also important to make little changes for big impacts. One of those changes? Drinking more water!
Multiple studies show some positive correlations between an increase in water consumption and losing weight. Not only is water a great tool when losing weight but it’s the fuel your body needs to help you be the best you. Keep reading and see 5 reasons why drinking water is important when trying to lose weight.
1. Water is a natural appetite suppressant
Oftentimes, we confuse hunger with thirst which can lead us to eat when you actually don’t need to be. Drinking a glass of water before acting on that hunger impulse can help curb unnecessary snacking.
In addition, water can make you feel more full, sending a signal to your brain that you should stop eating. This also is one way for people to not overeat. Drinking water 30 minutes before each email has proven results to help reduce body weight. In a 2014 study, 50 overweight females drank 500 milliliters (mL) of water 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in addition to their regular water consumption, for 8 consecutive weeks.
The participants experienced a reduction in body weight, body fat, and body mass index. They also reported appetite suppression.
2. Water helps to remove waste from the body
Did you know that when the body is dehydrated, it cannot correctly remove waste as urine or feces? Yes, we know that might be TMI but water helps kidneys to filter toxins and waste while the organ retains essential nutrients and electrolytes. So when the body is dehydrated the kidney retains fluid!
So if you have noticed either constipation or hard stools that can be a sign of dehydration. The more hydrated you are the less likely you are to feel constipated and also have softer stools as water keeps waste moving!
What you don’t want is a waste build up in your body! For many when waste builds up in the body, people may feel bloated, swollen, and tired. Bloating can add inches to a person’s waist.
3. Water increases calorie burning
There is just something about a nice cold glass of water that tastes so good when you do it. It’s made even sweeter when a study showed those who drank 500mL of cold and room temperature water experienced an increase in calorie burning. Yes, please!
In the same study, it showed those who drank that burned between 2 and 3 % more calories than usual in 90 minutes after drinking water.
4.Drinking water can reduce overall liquid calorie intake
In a world full of so many juices, sodas, and more it is a little too easy to increase your daily calorie intake. It adds up, especially when you add in alcoholic beverages. We aren’t saying you have to stop drinking them all but why not replace just one of your high-calorie drinks each day for water? If you find yourself having 2 sodas a day replace one with water instead! Doing this may have long-term weight loss benefits
Authors of a 2012 study found that replacing two or more high-caloric beverages for non-caloric drinks every day for 6 months resulted in an average weight loss of between 2 and 2.5 percent in a group of females with obesity!
5. Water is necessary to burn fat
When it all boils down, without water the body cannot properly metabolize stored fat or carbohydrates. Drinking enough water is essential for burning off fat from food and drink as well as stored fat. This is one of the main reasons why water is such an important part of losing weight.
